Although the Database is not my area of expertise this article attracted me to read, and I encourage you to check it out and see how Microsoft changing the game strategically, and how that affect Dynamics AX 2012 specially in Decision Support Systems (BI, and Reporting)

There are BUZZ words we have to mark them;

In-Memory OLTP (Online Transactional Processing) which known in Microsoft technologies by  Hekaton, it is the Greek word for 100 times.

Microsoft SQL Server  (PDW) Parallel Data Warehouse: the PDW will move from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012, and it will also gain a new feature called PolyBase

 Microsoft PowerPivot and Power View: the  in-memory business intelligence and analytics technologies which delivered by Microsoft

PowerPivot was introduced as an in-memory-analysis plug-in to Microsoft Excel with the release of SQL Server 2008 R2 in 2010

Power View is an in-memory data visualization option introduced in April with the release of SQL Server 2012

Office 2013 which builds PowerPivot and Power View directly into Microsoft Excel as data-exploration and visualization options available from the ribbon menu. That means customers will no longer have to download plug-ins to Excel in order for users to tap into data on enterprise SQL Server databases.
